So I may be about to turn 25, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less of a Disney fan than I ever was. Okay, maybe a little bit less. I guess I don’t watch the Disney Channel like I used to (but to be fair it probably isn’t as good as it used to be… remember Lizzie McGuire? Even Stevens? Phil of the Future?), but I still love a good DCOM – Disney Channel Original Movie.
I grew up on DC favorites like Brink, Smart House, The Color of Friendship, and can’t forget another Ryan Merriman classic The Luck of the Irish. I mean, who didn’t have a crush on that guy growing up? Remember his dance in Smart House?
And this week the extended trailer for the latest – and hotly anticipated – DCOM Descendants was released. The video begins with Chad Charming (Jedidiah Goodacre) who uses his newfound powers – as he’s about to become king – to decree that a few of the banished children of the Isle of the Lost should be able to come attend school in the kingdom.
He chooses Carlos (Cameron Boyce), son of Cruella De Vil, Jay, son of Jafar (Booboo Stewart), Evie (Sofia Carson), daughter of The Evil Queen, and Mal (Dove Cameron), daughter of Maleficent.
And while the children are well known for their Disney performances and film roles, the famous villains are played by some pretty iconic names themselves. Wendy Raquel Robinson and Maz Jobrani star, along with a woman known for another DCOM favorite – one I watch about a million times every Halloween, Hocus Pocus‘s Kathy Najimy, and of course, the unforgettable Kristin Chenoweth.
The legendary songstress sends her daughter -and the other three villainous spawn – on a mission to steal the fairy godmother’s wand as they’re welcomed into the kingdom, so she can “bend good and evil to her will.”
Things immediately get awkward as Keegan Connor Tracy, who stars as Belle, greets the new students by assuring Mal that she “totally doesn’t blame her” for her mother “trying to kill my parents and stuff.” Cue the awkward laughter.
Friction ensues, as students worry the kids will follow the lessons their parents – infamous villains – have taught them, but Chad remains as charming as ever, insisting they be given a chance.
Maleficent, meanwhile, who’s having quite the moment – first with her feature in the stunning Angelina Jolie-starring picture – has some wicked ideas as she’s spotted trilling: “It’s all about world domination!”
However, it seems they may surprise everyone, in the DCOM filled with romance, dragons, and of course, a dance number.
The much-anticipated TV movie Descendants debuts on the Disney Channel July 31 at 8pm.
And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Pixar followed the Disney Channel’s big announcement on Tuesday, by releasing a teaser for one of their upcoming features: The Good Dinosaur.
Speaking with Yahoo Movies, Director Pete Sohn shared that The Good Dinosaur – which imagines a world where dinosaurs didn’t get wiped out by meteorite – is your classic boy-and-his-dog story…that is, if you reverse the roles and make the alpha the dinosaur and the boy his pet.
An apatosaurus named Arlo (voiced by Lucas Neff) is separated from his pack and tries to find his way home. He comes across a young human that he names Spot.
John Lithgow, Frances McDormand, Bill Hader, Judy Greer and Neil Patrick Harris also voice characters in the film, which hits theaters November 25.
Until next time,
