Tricks and Treats

Yesterday entertainment sites picked up a Facebook post hinting at possibly the greatest news of all time… a sequel to 1993 Halloween classic: Hocus Pocus.

This “news,” of course, follows a string of sequels and reboots – Fuller House, Gremlins, The Muppet Show, etc. as nostalgia is quite the popular trend at the moment.

A photo was shared of a movie poster, featuring the infamous Sanderson sisters – Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy – along with the tagline: “They’re back!” And according to the poster, the film is titled: Hocus Pocus 2: The Witch is Back.

Facebook user Raven Noakes commented that the sequel was apparently being released in 2016, and described the plot as such:

“When a bumbling museum worker accidentally resurrects the infamous witch Desdemona Sanderson (Cloris Leachman), she conjures a spell that brings back her three daughters Winifred, Mary, and Sarah.

Charging the three witches with rounding up and collecting as many children as possible so they might live again.

But Winnie has only revenge in mind and sets off on a mission to find the Dennison family. A mission which brings her to New York city.

A series of mishaps occurs which sees Mary lost in Macy’s, Winifred taking Broadway by storm and Sarah luring men to their doom.

With her daughter held captive by the witches it’s up to Dani, Allison and Max to track them down before Desdemona unleashes her terrible powers upon Salem.”

Now, like many, I was thrilled to hear this news, as it isn’t Halloween without a viewing of this Disney classic.

I remember watching it a million times as a kid – Max (Omri Katz) was so cute, Allison (Vinessa Shaw) was so cool, and Thora Birch (as Dani) had the most adorable witch costume – and coming from a girl who dressed as one for at least 6 years in a row, that says a lot. And who didn’t want a cat like Binx? (Not to mention that in his human form – as Thackery (Sean Murray), he wasn’t so bad either… Am I right?)

And, honestly, I still watch it every year. It’s my favorite part of ABC Family’s 13 Nights of Halloween, which isn’t even necessary, seeing as I own it on DVD.

However, I had to stop myself from getting too excited, as there hasn’t been any official news yet, and it isn’t even on IMDb. And while I understand that site can be wrong sometimes… it being my pop culture go-to, that’s something I certainly don’t like to think about.

There is some hope though, because the Sanderson sisters themselves have spoken of wanting a reunion. Entertainment Tonight compiled all of the recent mentions, such as when Bette advised eager fans to write to Disney in order to get the sequel off the ground.

“Inundate the Disney company, because I have canvassed the girls and they are willing to do it, but we have no say in it, so if you want a HOCUS POCUS 2, ask the Walt Disney company,” she said.

Later, Jarett Wieselman of BuzzFeed tweeted Sarah Jessica Parker, asking her thoughts on a second film, and she shared her interest as well.

“Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy have both said they’d make a Hocus Pocus sequel. @SJP, you in?” Wieselman tweeted.

The Sex and the City star responded: “Yep. I’m In.”

So let’s all hope someone lights that black flame candle —

Until next time,
